One in ten U.S. households currently rent a self storage unit, but many others fall victim to believing common myths about self storage rentals. While some people have legitimate objections to renting a storage unit, many others are simple basing their decisions on the wrong information.
Here we’ll attempt to clear up some of the more common misconceptions about storage unit rentals.
Self Storage Misconceptions
- “I don’t have anything I need to store.” That’s what you think. Many people don’t realize they are storing things in their homes that they don’t want to get rid of, but they haven’t used or even looked at in years. Even things like holiday decorations can take up a lot of room in the house when they’re not being used. Things like that are perfect to store out of the way in a self storage rental until you need it.
- “Storage units are expensive.” Storage units vary a great deal in price based on a number of factors, such as size of the unit, location of the facility, features and amenities, and type of unit, but there are many affordable options. Oftentimes, storage facilities are willing to negotiate prices, especially if the facility is not full of tenants.
- “Storage units are dirty.” Sure, some storage units are dirty, but those are the kind of facilities you want to avoid. A professional, reputable company will have very clean units, and most storage units are quite a bit cleaner than the garage, basement, or attic that people are storing things in at home. All the same, it’s always a good idea to check out the unit for yourself before you sign on the dotted line.
- “Critters will destroy my belongings.” Self storage facilities take particular precautions to ensure that rats, mice, and insects cannot access the items contained in self storage units. Again, there’s a better chance of mice nibbling on your belongings in your own basement, than in a storage facility.
- “Storage units aren’t safe.” Self storage facilities make safety a priority. Many facilities use precautions such as keypad entry, electronic gates, fencing lighting, security cameras, etc. Storing valuable or priceless belongings in self storage units is much safer than storing them in garages, or outdoor sheds.
