In a recent HomeGoods survey, only one out of five Americans (20%) feel happy with their home decor. This is a figure that means a great deal, as Americans feel unhappy with what they have purchased or inherited, showing a great deal of buyer’s remorse. Americans have five larger categories of style that they generally decorate in: traditional, which includes 44% of Americans; modern, which includes 22% of Americans; eclectic, which includes 13% of Americans; country, which includes 10% of Americans; and global, which includes 2% of Americans.
Each of these styles is likely distinctive and likely has a different style of decor than the others. Traditional style may mean one thing, while modern another, eclectic another, country another, and global another. However, while American are unhappy with their decor, many seem happy with their furniture.
In a survey of over 2,000 consumers, 72.7% of respondents agreed that, “The design of my furniture reflects my personality,” and 67% of respondents agreed with the statement, “A lot can be said about a person from the furniture he or she owns.” Someone who owns a duvet that is colored green may be different than someone who owns Lazy-Boy recliners.
Of course, there are many different kinds of decor other than furniture. Decor can include paintings on the wall, wall fixtures, any kinds of lamps that are being used, if there are plants or not, what the color scheme is, the type of furniture, the quality of the furniture, the color of the furniture, and more.
When it comes to furniture, Americans believe they will be keeping it a long time.
- Over 92% of respondents said they plan to keep wood furniture for at least 15 years.
- In a survey of over 2,000 consumers, 95.1% said they expect furniture to last many years.
Of course, it is possible to be happy with your decor and not update it for many years. Happiness with furniture is critical, as you will be more apt to take care of it, more apt to invest more in it, more apt to repair if it gets damaged, and more apt to have neighbors, friends, and family over to sit on the furniture.
Nearly half of Americans (47%) have not updated their home decor in five years. This is true, even though there is a growing furniture industry, as evidenced by a forecast by the Freedonia Group that household furnishing demands will reach $34.9 billion by 2021. There is, of course, a great deal of demand when it comes to home furniture.
This demand is likely spiked due to the presence of numerous areas in American that are booming with real estate and the growing demand from people who are moving to the area for the first time. These areas can include Raleigh, North Carolina, San Fransisco, California, and other cities where populations are growing.
There seems to a rush in many places for housing and housing demands new furniture.
