Buying a new home is an expensive, exhausting, and exciting process, but the work doesn’t end there. Unfortunately, once you get to the bottom of your buying a new home checklist, you need to start another one: things to do when moving into a new home. One of the advantages of buying a new home is that you get a fresh start and can make changes before you even get into the house. Here are a few things to do before moving into a new home that definitely should not be left off of your list.

1. Change the Locks.
You don’t have to change every single lock in the house, but it’s usually a good thing to change the ones on the exterior doors at least, if the home has been lived in before. Between previous owners, their family members, neighbors, friends, and who knows who else, there might be a set of keys floating around out there to your house. You don’t want to take any chances.

2. Equip Closets With Organizers.
Another essential thing to do before moving into a new home is to make sure your closet space is going to work for you. Some luxury homes already have them, but it’s worth making sure that all of your storage spaces are outfitted with organizing shelves and cubbies to make the unpacking process go much more smoothly and to ensure that everything in the home is organized.

3. Check or Replace Detectors.
There are going to be a lot of things on your list, but this one should be right at the top of it, since this is a safety issue. You should make sure that you check to see where all of the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are in the house before moving in. Change all of the batteries and make sure to test them to see if they work.
