Dreams, Devotion and Addiction
By Neal Szpatura

Many traditional peoples have the absolutely unshakeable belief that nothing important ever happens unless we dream it first. That being the case, it certainly behooves us to turn to our dreams for help in affirming the steps along our devotional path. And it is equally valuable to examine our dreams for portents that may protect us from potential addictions or guide us in emergence from them.

The beings whom shamans would call spirit helpers (we might know them as angels or guides) frequently make their presence known through dreams. Sadly, our culture has not taught us to recognize this fact. Dreams that offer direct spiritual guidance, protection or healing often have a very special "aura." One or more characters in the dream, or even the setting itself, may be filled with a beautiful glowing light that seems to linger after awakening. Sometimes there is a person, generally the same sex as the dreamer, who speaks in an unusually warm, caring tone of voice. Often this person is not quite visible, perhaps off to the side of the dreamer. He or she gives precise information or direction for the dreamer to use in the dream or even in waking reality. Such helpers can take on other forms as well. I am often counseled in dreams through the antics of a beloved Springer spaniel and golden retriever team that are no longer with me. Somehow, I always "get" what they have to say.

More than anything else, the development of a regular dream-work practice permits our dreams to speak to us personally about how we can live in our own unique and proper balance. Our dreams will guide us to our true paths of devotion – in the spiritual, career, relational or any other aspect – and help us avoid or overcome addictions – even the so-called "positive" ones.
