Too many people spend so much of their lives wondering why things can't be better for them. They want to know why they cannot find the perfect mate, the perfect job, the right place to live or enough money to do the things they want to do in life. They look at other people who seem to 'have it all' and wonder what secret allows abundance to flow readily to them. In the two books, Ask and It is Given by Esther and Jerry Hicks and Hiring the Heavens by Jean Slatter, the answers to these questions may be found.

In their book, Ask and It is Given, Esther and Jerry Hicks explain that they channel a group of spirit guides who call themselves Abraham. Abraham's message is that we live in an abundant Universe whose sole purpose is to provide whatever we want in order to live our lives in happiness. We are the creators, and the Universe is just waiting to serve – as the Genie in the tale of Aladdin would put it, our wish is the Universe's command. The problem is that we resist what we want. We want more money, but we focus on the lack of money and the problems that go with it. The Universe responds by giving us more lack. Therefore, to change the unintended outcomes of our unconscious wishes, we have to change the way we think. Abraham uses half the book to provide easy exercises and fun games to help break down resistance and open up to the desired rewards.

Jean Slatter takes a slightly different and interesting perspective. She says that the heavens are filled with angels and guides that are waiting to assist us in every aspect of our lives. All we have to do is ask and “hire” them as we would hire actual employees. For example, when looking for the perfect house, hire a celestial real estate agent. When looking for the perfect job, hire a celestial headhunter. Slatter has been using this technique with great success and has taught it to many people who also have realized how easy it is to have the Universe supply abundance to us.

Ask and It is Given is a very interesting book and the exercises are fun to do. I have been trying one out each week. Hiring the Heavens is a little more practical. You can read the book in an hour and apply the ideas immediately. If you want to change your life, read both books – they are even more effective when read together.

Present Moment Awareness by Shannon Duncan
Present Moment Awareness by Shannon Duncan

I am a distance runner. Four mornings a week, I drive down to the Rocky River Metropark and run between five and seven miles along the bike path. That can take me anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour, depending upon the distance. I run alone and without headphones, so all I have are my thoughts. And what am I thinking about? Things that happened at the office yesterday, things that I need to do later in the day, concerns about how business will be next week. What am I not thinking about? What I am doing at that very moment in time.

In Present Moment Awareness, Shannon Duncan writes that much of our unhappiness comes from the fact that our thoughts dwell in other times. We are worried about the future, and we are upset about events in the past, but we rarely are involved with what is going on right at this moment. Yet it is in this very moment that we find freedom and enlightenment.

Duncan helps us to realize, through an easy narrative and simple exercises, that being in the moment gives us the opportunities to see beyond what our fears and inse-curities tell us. By living in the present, we can discover how to set aside emotional baggage from the past and worries about the future, in order to appreciate the opportunities that are avail-able to us right here and now.

If you want to find greater happiness and contentment in your life, read Shannon Duncan's book. And the next time I go running, I think I will look at the trees.

Eat Right for Your Type by Peter D'Adamo
Eat Right for Your Type by Peter D'Adamo

Published by G.P. Putnam's Sons
$16.47

This New York Times best-selling book, Eat Right for Your Type, which has been translated into more than 60 languages, is based upon extensive research and clinical testing that support the strong con-nection of blood type to health and disease. Specific information is offered about how blood type influences digestion, specific foods a person should eat or avoid, vitamins and supplements that should be emphasized or avoided and the most beneficial forms of exercise.

Author, Peter D'Adamo, is a second-generation naturo-pathic physician who spent 15 years researching the con-nections of blood type and diet to disease. While studying in Europe at several of the great spas, his father observed that different patients responded in different ways to the same diets. Since the body's fundamental source of nourishment is blood, he theorized (and then conducted research that confirmed) that some blood types would do well on high-protein diets, while others would do well on vegetable proteins. One blood type might be invigorated by intense physical activities such as aerobics, while another might respond better when performing lighter forms of exercise such as yoga.

The book has received numerous awards, including being named by industry analysts as one of the “ten most influential health books of all time.” D'Adamo was also named the “most intriguing health author of 1999.” I'd probably give Eat Right for Your Type an award for being an easy-to-read, user-friendly book on blood types, not to mention the fact that it confirmed much of what I have discovered about my body's reaction to different foods.

The book confirms what common sense might tell us that one diet and one form of exercise do not fit all. Rather, an individualized diet and exercise plan, based upon a blood type of O, A, B or AB, can provide the diet solution to help you stay healthy, live longer and achieve your ideal weight.
