What makes an extraordinary gift? Reflect for a moment about the ones that you have received – the ones that were personal, meaningful and priceless. Locally owned small businesses not only offer the most unusual and personal gifts, they also instill the satisfaction of supporting a local merchant. In our fast-paced society, it is very easy to be tempted by the “one-stop” shopping convenience offered by the mega-stores – milk, socks, fishing equipment and a mass-produced, run-of the-mill gift can all be purchased at the same retail giant. Instead, remember that Northeast Ohio is rich in small businesses selling the perfect gifts for the people you love!

Local galleries and shops often sell creations by local artists. By patronizing these small shops, you win three times over: you have found a unique, special, handcrafted gift; you have supported a local business; and you have enriched a local artist. Another fun and personal option is tickets to a play, concert or comedy show. If you're concerned about choosing just the right style or color, why not give a one-size-fits-all gift certificate? Support a local yoga teacher, massage therapist or restaurant. It may be something novel that the receiver may not have otherwise tried. Obviously, the list can be endless with just a little bit of thought and planning.

A plethora of small shops, restaurants and businesses are stitched into the fabric of our own community. They add texture to the diversity and personality of our gift-giving options. They add color to our lives and patronizing them bolsters our connection with community merchants. And, very importantly, supporting them strengthens our local economy. So this holiday season, add 'Shop Locally' to your to-do list. Even if you decide to buy just a few gifts from local merchants, your gift-giving experience will be richer for it!
