Dear Readers,
For this issue, the life-giving season of spring inspired us to investigate ways to bond with the Earth. First considering the connection of the Earth to the mother figure, we explore the power of the divine feminine. In our interview with Deepak Chopra, MD, he eloquently describes the feminine qualities that reside in all of us, male and female, as beautiful, creative, nurturing and passionate. Reverend Joan Gattuso also writes in her article about the importance of recognizing our inner divine feminine. This inner strength affords us the opportunity to explore alternate approaches with vitality and resolve. Both Dr. Chopra and Reverend Gattuso express their beliefs that an affirmation of our divine feminine will yield positive developments within ourselves and around the world.

Our cover story illustrates the outstanding strides made by passionate, devoted women in our Northeast Ohio community. Holly Harlan, Jackie Lowe Stevenson and Anne E. DeChant inspire a new world model where decisions and actions are based on love rather than fear. They give us insight into the power of dedication, compassion and social consciousness, as well as the variety of avenues available for transforming lives, our community and the world.

Cleveland's own Earth Day Coalition, with the force of hundreds of committed individuals, creates positive change in our community and across the nation. We explore this nonprofit's major programs and the ways that they reach into our community to protect our environment, our health and our future. The organization invites all of us to celebrate the Earth at EarthFest 2004 held at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo on April 18. For this event, renewable energy credits equal to the amount of electricity used for the day will be donated by a wind farm in Bowling Green, Ohio. This will offset the production of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas that causes global warming. Through actions like this, Earth Day Coalition demonstrates that opportunities to protect our community and our environment are reasonable and abundant.

As we vehemently seek balance and peace in the light of unsettling world events, many of us are searching for what is missing on this planet. Through a multitude of individual ways, that include eating a luscious organic meal at Sergio's or celebrating at EarthFest, we can all contribute to a healthy planet. We may respect Mother Earth and the immense wisdom she imparts to all of us if we quiet our busy minds, breathe and listen.

With love and respect,

All of Us at Balanced Living Magazine

Your cover story on birth options (January/February 2004) could not have come at a better time! We recently discovered that we are expecting. Thank you for discussing the beauty of birth. Too often, we pregnant women are inundated with stories of painful, long labors. While this still may be a reality, I truly appreciate the opportunity to learn about my options and feel empowered by the unique experience of giving life. Your article inspired us to further research our options. We have already decided to have a midwife.

Just a quick note to let you know how much I enjoy your column I Love My Job! How wonderful to read about the people who have found prosperity by following their passions. As a student, it encourages me to consider my future career plans in a new light.
