Childbirth
is an experience of the mind as well as the body. Imagery Birthing
techniques are based upon the concept that an expectant mother can
control her body's ability to work gently and effectively by directing
positive mental images to both her body and her baby. Learning to
use Imagery is simply learning how to relax and direct the flow
of thoughts (images) that come to us constantly, inspired by what
we see, hear, taste, touch and smell. Imagery Birthing is valuable
during pregnancy and childbirth, as it helps the expectant mother
to attain a deep feeling of relaxation, allowing her to take control
of her thoughts and direct them in a way that will benefit her.
This process allows her to have a better understanding of herself,
her pregnancy and her personal power. Imagery Birthing helps a woman
have a positive, healthy childbirth experience.
During the course of four prenatal visits, Imagery Birthing teaches
the expectant mother how to create the perfect harmony between mind
and body, allowing her to enhance her self-confidence, mental relaxation
and physical comfort during the birthing experience. The Imagery
Birthing Consultant assists the mother-to-be in 'imagining' a beautiful
pregnancy and birth; teaches her how to create her own endorphins
to relieve discomfort; shows her how color and aroma stimulate the
senses and assist in enhancing relaxation; and helps her prepare
the physical body for labor and birth. Imagery Birthing gives the
mother-to-be practical tools and methods for creating a positive,
peaceful birth. An expectant mother that feels in control will be
less anxious and more empowered.
Colleen Brezine, certified nurse – midwife, recalls her birthing
experience: "Through the practice of Imagery, I was able to
take myself somewhere pleasant and block the discomfort of labor.
The relaxation techniques learned through Imagery allowed my labor
to unfold more quickly and in a more peaceful environment."
